I was in Okinawa during part of the Vietnam war and stationed at Torii Station on old highway 6. I remember BC Street well! It was known as the largest U.S. Forces drinking area in the Far East and probably the world. Very fond memories of the Barkers yelling "Showie, Showie, Showie" while a cute local in a bikini had a boa constrictor around her shoulders. Two hours and ten drinks later you would be 4 blocks down, different barker, different girl, same snake.

Those were the days! I met a nice Okinawan gal in a small local restaurant near Sobe Village who is from a nice family. We have been married for 35 years now and have two grown and happily married children and three grandchildren. The Okinawan's, unlike the Japanese used to take life at a little slower pace and were the nicest people as a whole that I think I have ever met on this planet.

BC Street was nice and a great place to sow some oats but not a place to judge the true people of the Ryukyu Islands.

I just finished reading B.C. St. I opened it and finished it in 2 hours, couldn't put it down. Good book and I couldn't find any real glaring errors about Okinawa even though I was stationed there for 8 years. I even remember the US Club and think I have a match box form there.
