I live in Okinawa in Naha area so I don’t go to far to eat out, but recently couple of my friends and I went out eating near Kadena AB area, close to gate 5. We just happened to go into a place called “Maguroya” direct translation would be ” Tuna place”. The place is not to big but it has an at home atmosphere. The staff’s are very friendly and they speak a little English and they also have English menus, so that helps out alot. I had the sushi platter and some other foods. The food is excellent and the price was great. The sushi quality is fresh and the portions are generous. I have been to a lot of seafood restaurant but this place is good for friends gathering after work for couple of beers and food. I have gone there couple of times now and the last time I went I had the tempura dinner course, the shrimp tempura was excellent. The portion was large and NOT NO skinny shrimp inside like some other places serve. The reason I post this blog is I know how it feels like just arriving in Okinawa and not knowing where to go but I have been out exploring the Island and trying new things by hearing things from word of mouth and looking things up on the internet. I have Okinawan ancestry but I lived most of my life in Hawaii.

On how to get there, if your coming out of gate 5 turn left and after going about 250meters turn right to go on route 85 heading towards route 330. Travel on route 85 until you see on your left hand side a restaurant called “daruma soba” a big picture of a scary face of a man. When you see this restaurant turn right and go down 300 meters and you will see the restaurant sign “Maguroya” in English. There is parking in front of the restaurant and if you ask the staff they will show you a different parking area they have. I hope this post will motivate others to go out and seek a different type of adventure and cuisines. I will post some picture after I get some.

We were able to get one more charter in before the weather turned bad for the rest of the year. The largest mahi we landed were both over 5 feet long, and weighed over 30 pounds. (Last 2 pics on the Gallery, Page 3 www.saltwater-fishing-okinawa.com). We are still hitting decent tuna, nice rainbow runners, blue mackerel, and it seems that a school of skipjacks was passing through, because we nailed a whole bunch of them.

We are constantly testing new methods, and new baits to make fishing more productive for you. In 2007 we found new hooks, and new bait that has allowed us to boat more big fish than any other charter service on the island. Some may doubt this, but the pictures do not lie. The high cost of quality rigs is a good trade off for someone catching the biggest fish in their life, which is a comment we hear almost every time we go out.

Looking forward to another great year of fishing in 2008!
